The truths and triumphs of Grace Atherton
Publication year: 2019
Media class: Hardback
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Between the simple melody of running her violin shop and the full-blown orchestra of her romantic interludes in Paris with David, her devoted partner of eight years, Grace Atherton has always set her life to music. Her world revolves entirely around David, for Grace's own secrets have kept everyone else at bay. Until, suddenly and shockingly, one act tips Grace's life upside down, and the music seems to stop. It takes a vivacious old man and a straight-talking teenager to kickstart a new chapter for Grace. In the process, she learns that she is not as alone in the world as she had once thought, that no mistake is insurmountable, and that the quiet moments in life can be something to shout about.
I just loved this book. On the face of it musically talented girl in relationship with charismatic married man, blinded by love believing he will leave his wife when the children are grown. We (the readers) and the 2 friends, the wonderfully wise Mr Williams and the stroppy teenager Nadia know this won't happen. The man is a cad with far too much charm and flannel "(Gracie sweetheart, darling??). There is however more to this story. Music is part and parcel of Graces life and is woven throughout the book marking significant occasions. Always believing she doesn't have the talent after not finishing her first year at music college she becomes a lunier making violins, violas and cellos. A catastrophic incident upsets her whole apple cart leading to her having to mend a broken heart & instruments & rebuild her life and business. A real must read of friendship and strength and do listen to the music through the story there is a "playlist" at the back.
