The past has a habit of tracking us down. And tripping us up. When Kate was twenty-two, she had an intense and passionate affair with a married man, Callum, which ended in heartbreak. Kate thought she’d never get over it. Seventeen years later, life has moved on – Kate, now a successful actress, is living in London, married to Matt and mother to little Tallulah. Meanwhile Callum and his wife Belinda are happy together, living in Edinburgh and watching their kids grow up. The past, it would seem, is well and truly behind them all. But then Kate meets Callum again. And they are faced with a choice: to walk away from each other . . . or to risk finding out what might have been.
I heard RJ on Woman's Hour talking about this book so I knew it was not going to be another Gavin & Stacey, however RJ has created another mix of great characters in this debut novel. Infidelity, deceipt, cheating, lying are at the heart of this story of an affair between Kate, manipulative, selfish, self centred and Callum 17 years her senior who submits to pure lust until they are found out with the resulting consequences to his family. Humorous, warm, witty writing proving that the grass is "never greener" in this story of second chances, lost chances, and the wreckage from the car crash of relationship based on lust. Very easy to read, you have to know what happens even though you don't like the characters much except Matt & Hetty the nicest by far.
